Coupons 101: You Gotta Know the Lingo

I've been meaning to really explain couponing for some time now, & decided that January was the right time to start. Many people take a long hard look at their budgets in January (could it be those credit card bills rolling in?) & decide to tighten up the purse strings.

In order to really save money utilizing coupons, you need to know what all the abbreviations stand for. I've compiled a list of the most common terms in coupon lingo. This is certainly not a complete list, so if I've left something off, let me know.


BOGO (or B1G1): Buy One Get One (usually free but it varies, ie: BOGO 50% off)

Blinkie: Coupon dispensers located on the shelves of stores, near the product they are for

Cat or Catalina: Coupons that print out with your receipt (from a separate machine)

MIR: Mail in Rebate

MM: Money Maker

MQ: Manufacturer coupon

OOP: Out of Pocket

Peelie: Coupon attached to a product that you peel off

PG: Procter & Gamble coupon insert

Q: Coupon

RP: RedPlum coupon insert

RR: Register Reward at Walgreens (Catalina coupon received after transaction)

SCR: Single Check Rebate at Rite Aid

SS: SmartSource coupon insert

Tearpad: A pad of coupons located in a store (on displays, shelves, etc.)

+UP (+UP Reward): Coupon printed after a transaction at Rite Aid using your Wellness+ Card

Wags: Walgreens

WYB: When You Buy

YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary (meaning a deal may or may not work at your store)
