Possibly Free Kids Glasses at Target

My friend Holly emailed me about a great deal she read on another blog & while this deal isn't going on nationwide, it's still worth sharing with you.

Apparently in select cities, Target is giving away free children's glasses to kids 12 & under. You must have a valid prescription & the deal is limited to one free pair per household. The lenses are even scratch resistant & anti glare polycarbonate. While the glasses are free, for $25 you can purchase a protection plan which covers the glasses for 15 months (such a good idea for kids!).

I called the Target in Northgate & was told that the promotion was last year & only in select cities. However, a blogger in Salt Lake City mentioned getting them free this week, so it can't hurt to call your local Target to check.

If you get a free pair, leave a comment letting us know which city you shopped at. And Holly, thanks for sharing the tip!

Another Free Kids Craft Tomorrow

Head over to your local Lakeshore Learning tomorrow (July 31st) between 11-3 pm for the free kids craft. The project this week is called "What's My Mood Door Hanger" & it looks like a fun craft.

Free Kids Craft at Michael's

Tomorrow at all Michael’s stores in the US & Canada, there will be an eco friendly Crayola event between 10 am-2 pm. You can use Crayola's new Black Markers (the color only describes the label) which are made from recycled plastic. All the details are here.

Wii Steering Wheel Just 75 Cents Shipped!

Wow, this is a great deal if you need a Wii Steering wheel remote controller thingy (can you tell I don't have a Wii?). Click here & then use the code: MLCK267039073075NL1 at checkout to get it for a whopping 75 cents shipped! Note that this code will only work on the single controller.

My friend & loyal BMIM reader, Holly found this deal on another blog. Thanks for the tip, Holly!

Great Wolf Lodge Howl O Ween Weekend

I've been dying to share this with you for months, but had to wait until everything was finalized!

I am soooo happy & incredibly honored to announce that I will be participating in the Great Wolf Lodge at Grand Mound Howl-O-Ween NW Bloggers weekend, October 15-17th! And the best part is, you guys get to come too & get a discounted rate!

In addition to the water park & normal activities Great Wolf Lodge offers, there will be crafts, spooky story time, trick-or-treat, and more! I am going to wait to tell my daughter until just before we go (because I don't want to hear "when are we going Mom" every other day), but it will kill me to wait this long!

This will be a fun filled, family, & yes, frugal weekend! If hanging out in the water park isn't your thing, have your kids play there with your spouse (or grandparent, etc) & come attend some of the coupon/thrifty workshops that are going to be hosted by several Northwest Bloggers on Saturday afternoon.

I really hope some of you can come down with me. Because More Is More readers can reserve a Family Suite at the discounted rate of $169 per night (normally $239) for Oct. 15th & /or 16th when you book by 9/14/10 & use the code: 1010FAMBLOG. This is actually quite a steal when you consider how much rooms typically go for at Great Wolf Lodge & admission to the water park is included.
I hope to see you guys there. It's going to be a howlin' good time! (I know, cheezy, but I couldn't resist.)
A very special thank you to Liz at Great Wolf Lodge & Angela at Frugal Living NW for putting this weekend together. Also note that I will be receiving a discounted room rate as well for participating in this event.

33% off at Borders + Free Backpack

If you need to head to Borders, print this coupon out & save 33% on any 1 item. You need to be a Borders Rewards member, but you can sign up here if you haven't already. This coupon is valid 7/30-8/1 & can be used at U.S. Borders, Borders Express, and Waldenbooks stores and at Borders.com.

Additionally, through 8/5 you can get a free backpack with any in store purchase of $40 or more. It's not as good as the free backpack deal from Staples, but if you don't want to mess with a rebate & you need some stuff at Borders, you may as well get the free backpack. If you don't need it, donate it; there are always needy children who could use a new backpack for school.

Lastly, if you sign up for a Borders Rewards membership, you can get a free Seattle's Best Coffee drink after you purchase 5 of them at Borders. Ask a barista for all the info on how to get your freebie.

Mega Swagbucks Day

Exciting New Daily Deal Fetcher

I have been waiting to tell you about this for several months, but I was pinky sworn to secrecy (OK, I may be exaggerating just a smidge). A few months ago I participated in a user group study about finding deals online. Well, the website that was in development has gone live, & now I get to tell you about it!

Daily Deal Fetcher is a new site from the creative minds at Infospace. Essentially they scour the internet for all the daily deals out there from Groupon, Living Social, Tippr, etc & when you sign up, you receive one neat, concise email with the daily deals in your city listed for you. How awesome is that? Currently there are 37 cities you can choose from.

Go on, create an account, & get the deals delivered right to your inbox. You can even search other cities for deals if you plan on going out of town (because really, who wants to pay full price on vacation?!), have family out of state, etc. To get started with Daily Deal Fetcher, click here!

$2.99 Meal at Quiznos

Print out this coupon & score a complete meal (small sub, chips, & fountain drink) at Quiznos. This coupon is valid through 8/5/10. Mmm...toasty! (I couldn't resist.)

Thanks, Money Saving Mom.

Great Buy on Organic Bug Spray

Today's deal at EcoBabyBuys is a fantastic bargain! For just $15.59 (40% 0ff) get 2 bottles of certified organic baby bug spray from Lafe's. No one wants pesky bugs (& bug bites!) but the chemicals in conventional bug spray are so bad for you. Blech. This is a much safer alternative, & this spray received a hazard score of 0 in the Environmental Working Group's Cosmetic Safety Database!

I have tried Lafe's natural deodorant & really like it. All Lafe’s Organic Baby Products are Certified Estrogenic Activity Free & are:
• Free of parabens, propylene glycol, pesticides, SLS
• No artificial preservatives
• No artificial dyes or colors
• Vegan
• Cruelty-free
• Fragrance-free and hypoallergenic

Additionally, their packaging is estrogenic activity free plastic too. No nasty BPA, phthalates or harmful chemicals in these bottles! Most plastic bottles leach estrogens that may be harmful to infants and children. Lafe’s uses only certified baby-safe plastic.

This deal is only good today, so place your order now if you want some. The price might seem a bit steep initially, but consider that it is for 2 bottles & then think about the price of conventional bug spray (those bottles can easily run you $6 each if not more) & you'll likely realize what a bargain this is.

Smashbox Freebie Today Only

Every Tuesday & Thursday Smashbox has a deal called “Let’s Do Lunch” where they give you a free gift with any order between 9-2 pm PST. Today’s gift is this Mini Soft Lights highlighter (shade: Tint) that retails for $16!

Just place an order & after you hit submit & the freebie will show up on your order. Additionally, you can become a Pretty Points member which has lots of perks (free shipping, points earned for all your purchases, bonus deluxe sample, birthday gift, etc.). If you’re gonna buy something, you may as well get free shipping & other bonus items, right?

Lastly, you get the “Let’s Do Lunch” freebie on any purchase, so make it as cheap as you can (unless you really have a specific item in mind). The Curtain Call section is items that are on sale, so pick one of those.

Whole Foods Coupons

I have a serious love affair with Whole Foods Market (or Whole Paycheck Market, as I like to call it). Whole Foods is one of my happy places; I can easily spend an entire afternoon there & spend a ton of money while doing so.

However, Whole Foods does offer their own coupon book called The Whole Deal that you can pick up in store. You can also print them out here. Happy shopping!

Today only head over to BestDealMagazines & get a 1 year subscription to Everyday Food with Martha Stewart for just $4.47. The daily deal price is $5.39 but use the code: SERVERMAINT to take 17% off.

Radio Flyer My 1st Scooter (Pink) $29

Hurry before this sells out! Get this Radio Flyer My 1st Scooter in pink for just $29 (marked down from $65.99). You even get free shipping on this item. If you want it in red, it's $42.58.

This would be a great present under the tree on Christmas morning. And if you're using Swagbucks, you could get this item for free!

Timi & Leslie Bag 88% Off

Timi & Leslie make very upscale diaper bags with very upscale prices. Today only at MamaBargains, you can get a Timi & Leslie bag in either red, espresso brown, or cream for just $42. This bag normally retails for anywhere between $350-$379!

Honestly, I think this bag is attractive enough to just use it as a big purse. It doesn't look diaper bag-ish at all, in my opinion. And in fact, Timi & Leslie do make purses, & since this one doesn't come with a changing pad, my guess is that it is a purse.

Free Eco Friendly Craft eBook

I am sooooo not a crafty person. I am always in awe of people who can take 2 pipe cleaners, an empty yogurt cup, & glitter & create a masterpiece (when all I see is garbage). So if you're crafty, or just want to be crafty, download a free eBook here titled 42 Ways to Recycle.

I did purchase a book about making crafts with recycled materials a year or so ago. But after the Junk Mail Paper Maiche Fiasco, the book hasn't seen much use. Maybe I should download this eBook for some new inspiration!

Thanks, Deals I Have Received!

Tasty Tuesday

While most people think of cranberries during the fall, I love them all year round. This recipe is super easy, yummy, & uses your slow cooker, which is nice on a hot day. I got it from this book & have made it several times.

Cranberry Pork Roast

  • 3-4 lb pork roast
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 cup finely chopped cranberries (or use 1 can cranberry sauce)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange peel
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)

Sprinkle roast with salt & pepper. Place in slow cooker. Combine remaining ingredients & pour over roast. Cover & Cook on low 6-8 hours, or until meat is tender.

Bumkins 45% off Today Only

If you need to purchase some Bumkins diapers, today is your lucky day! At EcoBabyBuys they are only $13.95 (45% off).....but as always, it's for today only so don't delay.

Why are Bumkins so great? Well, for one, they are cloth so there are less chemicals in contact with your baby's skin (& many moms report very little diaper rash symptoms). They are PVC, phthalate, & vinyl free. They are made in the USA. But most importantly, they are better for the environment! It has been estimated that disposable diapers will sit for approximately 500 years in a landfill. So every cloth diaper used is better for your baby's tushie & our planet.

If you need to order some Bumkins, you can do so here.

It's Mega Swagbucks Day

Don't forget....Fridays are Mega Swagbucks Day! You can earn a LOT more Swagbucks than normal. Not Swagging yet? You should be! I've gotten $25 in Amazon gift cards since the start of July & have plenty more Swagbucks to redeem. Click here to start earning free stuff!

Target's Back in Black Sale = Bust

Maybe I'm just tired & cranky, but in my opinion, Target's big Back in Black sale is a total bust. It's just a huge mish mash of stuff they want to get out of their warehouse for new inventory coming in (just as I suspected). The problem is, the prices aren't even that great. You can easily do just as good checking the regular Target clearance section & their Daily Deals.

Now that I am sufficiently annoyed, I'm off to bed.

Better Oats BOGO Free Coupon

Go "like" Better Oats on Facebook & get a BOGO Free coupon from them (hit the back button two times after it starts to print to generate a second coupon). There are several varieties that are organic as well!

Click here to find a store near you that carries Better Oats. In the NW they are at Winco, Haggen (I'm guessing Top Foods as well), & are coming soon to Fred Meyer & QFC.

Old Navy: 25% off for Teachers & Students

Update: I called my local Old Navy & was told that the student discount only applies to high school & college students, but was given a different reason & this one makes sense. Little kids clothing (including uniforms) will be on sale, but adult sizes (which high school & college kids wear) won't be on sale, hence the 25% discount for them. So there you have it!

July 23rd-July 25th, Old Navy is offering up 25% off an entire purchase for teachers & students. From their Facebook page: "We love students and teachers! They’ll receive 25% off their entire purchase, this Friday through Sunday only. Students—show your college or high school ID to receive your discount. Teachers, show your school ID or pay stub to receive yours."

I called Old Navy's customer service & asked how younger kids could get the discount & was told it was only for older kids who were "paying for the purchase on their own." Hhhmmm....I'm not sure what to make of that. I did read on Old Navy's FB page that some people are being told by their local stores to bring in a report card or something to prove a younger child is enrolled in school, so all I can say is, it's worth a shot, but YMMV (your mileage may vary).

Free Backpack at Staples Next Week!

Staples has their ad preview for next week up & there are some great back to school deals you should check out. While I didn't see this in the ad, my guess is you may need to be a Staples Rewards member to get the deals listed; you can do this online or in store.

Here are a few of the best deals I saw:

  • Free backpack (limit 1 per household)! Buy a backpack 7/25-7/31 & get the entire purchase price back in the form of a Staples gift card after the Easy Rebate. (Yes, I realize you're paying it, but you're getting the entire amount back to use on other supplies, so it's like getting it free.)
  • 500 sheet ream of copy paper, 1 cent after Easy Rebate (limit 2 per household). Sun-Wed only.
  • Bic black pens, 8 pack, 1 cent with $5 minimum purchase (limit 2 per household). Sun-Wed only.
  • Zebra retractable Gel Pens, 5 pack, 25 cents after Easy Rebate (limit 1 per household).
  • Staples Hype! pen style highlighters, 6 pack, 25 cents (limit 2 per household).
  • Plastic box w/lid, 0.14 liter, 25 cents (limit 2 per household).
  • Ticonderoga #2 pencils, 12 pack, $1 with in ad coupon (limit 2 per customer).
  • B2G1 Free on all Avery binders.

Target's Back in Black Friday Sale

You may or may not have seen me on KOMO 4 News last night discussing tomorrow's Back in Black sale at Target (& the other Christmas in July sales). You can preview some of the items that will be on sale at Target (online only) staring at midnight PST tonight here.

However, I want to take a few minutes to discuss the trend of Christmas in July sales with you.

  1. Quantities are limited. Target has a history of overselling products & cancelling transactions. It happened to me a year or so ago. I had a confirmation number, my credit card was charged, & then the order was canceled by Target. So be aware that your order may get canceled. You might get lucky, you might not...but just go into it knowing that.
  2. Use your credit card. Don't use your debit card! When Target canceled my order that I just mentioned, my credit card was credited right away. However other people online were complaining that it took 4 or 5 days to get their money back into their checking accounts. Skip the debit cards & use a credit card & save yourself the hassle.
  3. Compare prices elsewhere! As you saw on KOMO, I found several items either identically priced, just a few dollars more, or even cheaper elsewhere...& all are available right now. I like to use Amazon or Shopzilla for quick searches to see if I can find a better price. Don't let the "Christmas in July" hype brainwash you; verify that this is in fact, a good deal before you hit "purchase."
  4. Target has not indicated what the shipping fees will be for the sale items. Those can add up, so add the item you want to your cart & check the shipping. It may or may not be a deal if the shipping is high.
  5. Make sure you don't buy more than you need! I know this sounds obvious, but retailers will do anything to create a sense of urgency & get people to make a purchase. If you do purchase anything during these sales, be careful not to overspend in the upcoming months. There will be sale after sale from now until the holidays & you will always find a great deal. Don't buy "just one more thing" because it's a bargain. When you're done, you're done. Otherwise you might blow your holiday budget on little purchases here & there.
  6. There will always be another sale. If you miss out on something you want tomorrow, don't fret. Retailers are hurting & you can rest assured the deals will continue to roll out as the holidays get closer.

Remember, Target's Back in Black sale starts tonight at midnight PST. If you see something on the preview site that you like, I'd recommend staying up late to order it if you're on the west coast, or set your alarm & get up bright & early if you live in another time zone. Leave a comment if you snag a deal!

Back to School Clothing Sale at Amazon

Amazon has a nice little back to sale clothing promotion going on. Save $10 off a $50 clothing order, or save $25 off a $100 order. Also, you'll get get free Super Saver shipping on your order. Note that you must purchase from Amazon, not one of their affiliated sellers. All of the details can be found here.

$10 in Free Products at The Limited

Head to your local Limited store through July 25th & get $10 in "Fashion Cash" to spend. If you find something for $10, you'll get it free! Be aware that clearance & sale items are excluded.

Thanks for the tip, Coupon Clippin' Daddy!

Free Appetizer from Macaroni Grill

Tasty Tuesday

My mom came over to watch my daughter last week & they made a yummy cake. It was so easy & you could easily substitute the apples for pears, the walnuts for your favorite nut (or omit them if you wish), that this cake is incredibly versatile & yummy. I'm not going to lie; I ate it for breakfast 2 days in a row!

Cinnamon Apple Snack Cake

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • 14 cinnamon graham crackers, finely crushed
  • 1 medium apple, peeled, cored, & chopped
  • 3/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Beat eggs lightly in a medium bowl. Add sugar & mix well. Stir in crumbs, melted butter, nuts, & apples; mix until well blended.

Spread mixture evenly into greased 8x8 baking pan. Bake 40-45 minutes or until firm to touch. Cool completely & dust with powdered sugar.

14 NIght Celebrity Cruise Just $999

Target's Baby Clearance

Twice a year Target does a massive clearance on their baby items to make room for new colors, models, etc. July is one of the clearance months & my good friend & loyal BMIM reader told me the baby clearance has started.

Janelle saw the Britax Roundabout car seat (print: Stonehenge) on sale for $139.98; this seat normally retails for $199.99! If you're a NW reader, there were 2 of these at this price at the Lake Stevens Target.

Often the items aren't priced correctly, so I always recommend scanning them at the price scanners located around the store. Even items that aren't marked clearance may be discounted & just not marked, so it's worth scanning to see.

Leave a comment if you find a massive deal. Thanks Janelle for the heads up!

Free Kids Craft Tomorrow

Night Guardian Plush Toys $6.99 Shipped

A few months ago I blogged about the Night Guardian Defenders of the Dreamtime toys & I bought one for my daughter. They are on sale again today only at Kids.Woot. The difference is....they are cheaper than what I paid for them! You can get either Skye (the pink one) or Thayer for just $1.99 + $5 in shipping.

You're probably wondering what these toys are all about, so let me explain them to you. The concept is they are superheros & their powers are preventing your little one from becoming scared of the dark at night. They have a crystal that lights up on their chest & they say things like "Don't worry your head, the Night Guardians are by your bed" (don't quote me on this saying...I'm going on memory here). In addition to the plush toy, there are 2 additional "crystals" that you can place around your child's room. When they press the paw of the toy, the other crystals light up & stay lit for 5 minutes. You also get a little booklet that you can read at bedtime about the Night Guardians & how they take care of kids at night.

I will tell you this: my daughter loves Skye. Like.....loves this doll. I can often hear her squeezing the paw & then hear Skye saying something. I think it is a great concept for kids who are afraid of the dark. And at only $6.99 shipped, how can you really go wrong?! This would make a fantastic gift as well, & since shipping is just $5 no matter how many you buy, you might want to consider getting a few.

If I have anything negative to say about these toys, it is that they do take a lot of batteries. But with the doll & the additional 2 crystals, that's to be expected.

Remember, this deal is good today only! Click here if you'd like to order a Night Guardian.

Tasty Tuesday

I did it again; I meant to post this earlier but forgot about it. Sorry!

So here's the deal: You know that in my house we eat almost exclusively organic products. And almost everyone knows organic typically costs more. So my ears perked up when my friend, Sue told me she made organic yogurt in her crock pot. Yes, in her crock pot!

She stated it was super easy, tasted awesome, & was affordable. The recipe & info is found on an awesome blog, Crockpot365. In fact, someone left a comment on the blog that compared the price of the homemade organic yogurt & Yobaby organic yogurt (& yay for us Puget Sound readers, she based her price off stores in Seattle!) & the results are eye opening. Yobaby was 27 cents per ounce & the homemade organic yogurt was 2 cents per ounce. Holy cow! Talk about stretching your dollar!

I will admit that I haven't tried this yet, but I am definitely going to do so soon.

The best part about this deal is that eco friendly, chlorine free diapers such as Seventh Generation, gDiapers, Earth's Best & more are included in this sale.

If you don't have a subscription to Parents, run to your local store & pick up a copy of the August issue to take advantage of this deal (but check to make sure the coupon hasn't been ripped out of the magazine). The coupon is good for one purchase, so stock up....especially at this price!
