I've Lost That Frugal Feeling...

Cue Usher, because I'm about to make a confession. About a month ago, I was at a baby shower for a friend of mine & the subject of my blog came up. I was asked "How do you find the time to clip the coupons, organize them, find the deals, blog about them, & still have a life?" The answer is simple: I don't.

Don't get me wrong; I love a good deal as much as all of you. And while I used to have my coupon binder organized, it isn't now. Here is my big, scary, shocking secret: Since the start of June I have clipped a grand total of 5 coupons (which I used all in one deal at Rite Aid). With my daughter home from school & the fact that she had some health issues over the summer, I didn't have time to clip coupons. I have a stack of newspapers so big, I'm confident that if I laid them end to end they would stretch halfway to Texas.

At first I felt guilty about it. But I came to the realization that as with all things in life, there is a season. And my season for clipping coupons was obviously not during the summer. So I let the guilt go. The world would still spin if I didn't cut coupons out of the Sunday paper. My family would still eat, we'd have shampoo & toothpaste (thanks to my stockpile!), we would still have clean clothes, & our lives would go on.

The reason I am sharing this with you is to let you know that I'm not perfect. None of us are. We're real people, living real lives, & sometimes life gets in the way. So don't feel bad if you miss a deal, your coupon stash isn't organized, or you haven't clipped coupons in months. It happens.

Having said that, I'm ready to get back to couponing. I would like my grocery & drug store budgets to be less & I know that coupons are the way to reduce them. I'm hoping some of you will be on board, too. I'll be posting more grocery & drug store deals, so get ready for it. If you're relatively new to couponing, this will be the perfect time to jump in. I'm going to discuss coupon organization, coupon lingo, the drug store game, etc.

Eco Friendly Kids Book & CD Giveaway

If you've been reading my blog for any length of time, you will know that I am passionate about living a green (ish) lifestyle. I loved how it reinforced the notion that little things can add up to a huge impact.

The CD of music by southern musician, Washboard Leo Thomas is a great bonus as well! It's fun to listen to & my daughter was pretending to tap dance to it in the back seat of our car. Listening to the CD in your car is a great way to bring up the concept of not littering, recycling, etc. when you aren't sitting reading the book. In my opinion, anything that gives adults another opportunity to discuss the subject with kids is great. I have a feeling my daughter will be pointing out every piece of trash on the ground on her way to school for the next few weeks!

Tasty Tuesday

Kristen, a loyal BMIM reader, posted this recipe on the Facebook wall last week, & it sounds so yummy I had to make it today's recipe. I think it would be the perfect game day dip with some nice tortilla chips!

Green Dip (I say call it Shrek dip & your kids will likely eat this up!)

Take one pouch of guacamole, 1 brick of cream cheese, 1 bunch of cilantro, 1 cup of milk, 1/2 jar of Salsa Verde (the green salsa) 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp garlic, 2 tsp lemon juice, and blend in a blender (may need more milk to reach consistency of salsa). Let sit for 30 minutes to blend flavors & serve with chips.

FYI: Puberty Starting in Second Grade

If you've been reading my blog for any length of time, you know I don't comment on my political affiliation. However, I am quite vocal about the importance of a more green, natural lifestyle. And here's one more reason why I feel it's so important: Last month the journal Pediatrics published an article stating that more than one in ten girls are starting to develop breasts by age seven, with even higher rates in some communities.

One theory as to why girls are starting to enter puberty so young is their exposure to chemicals containing endocrine disruptors. These chemicals are found in common products we all likely have in our homes. However, the Toxic Substances Control Act currently does not require that chemicals be tested to assess their ability to disrupt hormones. This is simply baffling to me!

Aside from being awkward, early puberty poses some potentially serious side effects. Higher risk of breast cancer, depression, low self esteem, & earlier sexual activity have been attributed to the early onset of puberty.

What can you do? Write your Congressmen & ask for them to sponsor an update to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Purchase more natural or organic foods, cleaning supplies, makeup, etc. Keep your children active (obesity can also bring on early puberty). Read up on this subject. Get involved.

I've been super bad & forgotten to post any recipes the last few weeks. I am beyond lame! Since school has started & we're all likely running around, here's another slow cooker recipe for you. It's from the amazing blog, Crockpot 365.

Slow Cooker Marmalade Curry Chicken

• 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves or thighs
• 1 (18-ounce) jar orange marmalade
• 1 1/2 teaspoons curry powder
• 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
• 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
• 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
• 1/4 cup chicken broth

Place the chicken in the bottom of your slow cooker. In a small bowl, combine the marmalade, dry ingredients, & chicken broth & pour mixture on top of chicken. Cover & cook on low 6-7 hours or on high about 4 hours. Serve with rice.
