Tasty Tuesday

This is one of my all time favorite recipes. Certainly my favorite soup recipe. I used to buy this little 1 pint container of soup at Pasta & Co. for about $5 & realized that was crazy expensive (& I would buy this a lot!). So, I got finally broke down & purchased their cookbook Pasta & Co. By Request which had the recipe in it.

Guess what? The soup is insanely easy to make, pretty affordable (certainly more reasonable than $5 per pint!), & delicious. Everyone I have ever given the recipe to raves about it. It's perfect cold weather food, so make a batch soon & enjoy!

Tomato Cheddar Soup

3 t butter
1/2 cup onion, roughly chopped
1 28 oz. can Paradiso brand pear tomatoes in juice, chopped into 1/4" pieces, including all juices (I've used other brands of tomatoes, & they work fine)
1 1/4 cups chicken stock (I've also used vegetable stock & it's fine)
1 1/4 cups water
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 teaspoon white pepper (come on....I use regular black pepper!)
7 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, grated (sharp is better, but a good quality medium cheddar works fine as well)
salt m& pepper to taste

In a 3 qt saucepan melt butter & saute onions until soft. Add tomatoes & their juices, chicken stock, & water. Bring to a simmer, then remove from heat. Let cool for 10 minutes.

Add 1/2 of the sour cream. Whisk until well blended, then add remaining sour cream. Stir in the pepper & cheese to blend. Salt & pepper to taste. Gently reheat & serve.

Makes 6 cups

24 Photo Cards $2.49 Shipped!

I will preface this deal by saying I've never had good luck with SeeHere. I have no idea about the quality of the cards (although I've heard they are good), I just have found the interface so difficult, I've never ordered from them. Maybe it was my browser (IE)....but just be warned that you might get frustrated like I did.

However, if you have good luck with SeeHere, then snag this deal! Create some 4x8 photo cards, add 24 to your cart, then use code: 25cards at checkout. You'll get the cards free & just pay $2.49 in shipping.

Thanks, For the Mommas!

Embroidered Stocking $8 Shipped!

I've always felt somewhat bad that I never got a personalized stocking for my daughter for Christmas. We have numerous beautiful stockings that she's used, & she's never complained, but I felt bad. 75% off Rental with Amazon on Demand

I've never watched a movie via Amazon on Demand, but if you are more high tech than me you can score 75% off a movie rental from them. This offer is valid through 11/30/10.

Today is Small Business Saturday!

While I love the big box stores as much as anyone, I firmly believe where you shop is important. I am a huge supporter of independent businesses, which is why I'm so excited today is Small Business Saturday!

Did you know that:

  • Out of every $100 spent at a local small business, $68 returns to the community?

  • Small businesses employ 50% of all private sector employees?

  • Small businesses represent 99.7% of all employer firms?

  • For every year over the last decade, 60-80% of new jobs were created by small businesses?

While supporting local small businesses is important, today there's a cash incentive to do so! If you are an American Express cardholder, register your card before heading out to the stores today. Shop at participating small businesses on Small Business Saturday. You will receive a $25 statement credit when you spend $25 or more at participating small businesses!

It doesn't state that you have to enroll before today (at least anywhere I could find), but that may have been a requirement. Of course, you will want to verify with the small businesses you frequent that they are participating in today's event. However, this promo is a great way to improve your local economy...& your own at the same time!

Thanks, The Coupon Project!

The Foundary is having a huge sale on KidKraft items. If you are in the market for a play kitchen, dollhouse, outdoor furniture, etc. you should check it out!

I snagged (er, Santa snagged) the dollhouse pictured above for $94 + $5.95 shipping. It's currently on Amazon for $118.54, $118.99 at Target, & $151.99 at Toys R Us.

My Favorite Leftover Turkey Recipe

I love turkey (Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday) & have been known to make a full turkey dinner in July before. I love leftover turkey. In fact, I had it for breakfast today (don't judge me!). However, at some point I need to use the turkey up in a different way.

This will be the 15th year I have made this recipe for dinner on Black Friday. I think my husband & I look forward to it more than Thanksgiving dinner itself. It's easy to make, delicious, & is total comfort food. The recipe is in the Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbook. My copy was giving to me when I got married & it appears the edition was even a few years old when I got it, as the copyright states 1989. I have no idea if the newer versions of the cookbook have the recipe in there. Also, technically, the recipe calls for chicken, but I substitute turkey. If you look in your cookbook then, the recipe will be for Chicken Enchiladas.

Now, drum roll please......

Turkey Enchiladas

8 6 inch tortillas
1/2 cup chopped onion
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 t ground coriander
1/4 t pepper
4 T butter
3 T all purpose flour
1 8 oz. carton sour cream
2 cups chicken broth
1 or 2 canned jalapeno chili peppers, rinsed, seeded, & chopped (I omit this!)
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese (um yeah....I add more!)
2 cups cooked turkey, chopped
sliced black olives (optional)
sliced green onions (optional)

Wrap tortillas in foil & heat in a 350 degree oven for 10-15 minutes or until softened.

For sauce, in a saucepan cook onion, garlic, coriander, & pepper in butter until the onion is tender. Stir flour into sour cream; add to the onion mixture. Stir in broth & chili peppers all at once. Cook & stir until thickened & bubbly. Remove from heat & add 1/2 of the cheese.

For filling, stir 1/2 of the sauce into the turkey. Place about 1/4 cup onto each tortilla; roll up. Arrange seam side down in a lightly greased baking dish (I use 9x13) & top with remaining sauce. Cover with foil & bake for 35 minutes at 350 degrees.

Remove, sprinkle remaining cheese over the enchiladas, & bake for approx. 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Sprinkle with olives, green onions, diced tomatoes, etc. as you wish (although I don't use any toppings...they are amazing as is!).

$1/1 Tillamook Cheese Coupon

I'm going to let you in on a dirty little secret of mine: While the majority of food in our house is organic, I love & still eat Tillamook cheese (I buy organic cheese for my daughter!). I have yet to find an organic cheese that tastes as good as Tillamook.

So you can imagine how excited I was to find out that if you like Tillamook Cheese on Facebook you can print out a $1/1 coupon for Tillamook cheese!

Thanks, Queen Bee Coupons!

Dyson DC17 Animal Vacuum $364.99

Today only over at Woot you can get the Dyson Animal (DC17) vacuum for just $359.99 + $5 shipping. That's a fantastic deal!

BOGO Free Baja Fresh on Black Friday

If you & a friend are hitting the stores on Friday, head to your local Baja Fresh. They are offering BOGO Free entrees, which would make it a cheap lunch. Here are the details from their Facebook page: Come and enjoy a free entree this Black Friday!! This offer is exclusive for Facebook fans! Step 1- Open the picture with the offer, Step 2- Click account in the upper right hand corner of the page (make sure your name appears under account). Step 3 - Print the page and ENJOY! HOT: Kindle $89 on Friday 9am PST

If you've been considering an eReader but haven't purchased yet because of the price, listen up! Friday morning at 9am PST, Amazon will be selling the 3G Kindle (the previous model; this one doesn't have WiFi) for only $89! I have no idea how many of these they have, but my guess is they will sell quickly, so if you want one, log on a few minutes before 9am PST.

I'm wondering: Is it OK to give an older model as a gift? Or is that tacky? Certain people (like my parents) wouldn't know the difference, so maybe it depends on the recipient. Leave a comment if you have an opinion on this.

Also, if you prefer the Nook, it is a doorbuster item on Friday morning at Best Buy for $99.

2 Pairs of Mossimo Jeans $15 Shipped!

Target's Daily Deals are all apparel items today. In my opinion, the best deal is the BOGO 50% off on Mossimo jeans in junior sizes. That means you would get 2 pairs of jeans for $15 & they ship free! You can even mix & match sizes & styles!

Black Friday Roundup

I'm blessed to be a part of a fantastic group of NW bloggers. They are some of the funniest, smartest, most talented people I know. And we subscribe to the "work smarter, not harder" philosophy, which is why we decided to work together to cover Black Friday. There is no way I could have scoured all the Black Friday ads & nor could they. But together we have a pretty good grasp on the madness that will occur on Friday.

So sit down, take your time, & formulate you game plan. Whatever is on your list, I'm pretty sure we have it covered. I'll update the list if any other stores are covered. Enjoy & be safe on Friday, everyone!

I will warn you in advance that there may be a problem getting your $10 rebate back on this deal. The Sonicare rebate states "not to be combined with any other offer." Having said that, here's how you can score a Sonicare Essence toothbrush for $10.99 at Rite Aid & possibly 99 cents after the rebate:

Purchase the Sonicare Essence toothbrush $44.99

Go "like" Nestle Drumstick on Facebook & print out the $1/1 coupon for Lil' Drumsticks. It's a Bricks coupon, so don't forget to hit the back button to generate a second coupon.

Tasty Tuesday

Today's recipe is another one of my favorites for Thanksgiving. I've been making corn pudding for years now, & it's always a hit. Two years ago I went online to find a slow cooker recipe for it, in an attempt to free up oven space (let's face it, even with double ovens it's easy to run out of space). I stumbled across this recipe on Recipezaar (now Food.com) & both my husband & I agree that we prefer the slow cooker version.

One word of advice: Grease the heck out of your slow cooker, because this does like to stick. Also, plan on cooking it longer than the stated time, because it takes a while for the center to fully set (although I think the oval slow cooker helps with that; the round slow cooker seemed worse).

Enjoy Slow Cooker Corn Pudding!

Weekend Special in Cannon Beach

NW readers: If you want to get away this weekend, consider heading to Cannon Beach (I love, love, love Cannon Beach & the beach is awesome when it's chilly). The Surfsand Resort has a last minute special: Reserve a guest room on Saturday, November 27 at 20% off & receive the second night free!

R.W.Knudsen & Body Shop Giveaway

This is another great giveaway from R.W. Knudsen & the Body Shop. I can vouch for this as well, because I won the last giveaway they did together & the prize was around $150 worth of products!

Go "like" R.W. Knudsen on Facebook & then click on The Body Shop tab on their wall. There you can enter to win the entire Cranberry Joy line from The Body Shop & a 750 ml bottle of R.W. Knudsen Sparkling Cranberry juice!

A winner will be picked every day between now & December 10th, so make sure you enter every day!

$10 off $10 Naturalizer Purchase

This is a great coupon code! Get $10 off any $10 or more purchase from Naturalizer when you use the code: ECU810 at checkout. Additionally, any order ships free through December 25th.

Take a look at the sale section. I found the purse pictured above on sale for $29.99 (regularly $89). After the discount it would be just $19.99 shipped. I can't imagine anyone being upset over receive that for a gift this holiday season!

Thanks for the coupon code, Little People Wealth.

Free Rayovac Batteries

Rayovac reset the coupons on their Facebook page. Go over & "like" them (like BMIM while you're there!), click on the coupon tab, & print the ones you want.

You can frequently find Rayovac batteries in the Dollar Spot at Target, so the $1/1 coupon should mean free batteries. This is just in time for the holidays, because we all go through a ton of batteries at the holidays!

Toy Deals at Target Online

All of Target's Daily Deals today are toys. The one I thought was the best deal was teh 4 pack of Zhu Zhu pets for $14.99. Don't forget, you get free shipping on all the daily deals, so see if there's an item on your shopping list!

Best Buy Black Friday Deals

Best Buy typically has one of the longest lines for Black Friday. If there is a big ticket item you really want there, be prepared to spend the night in line. Bring chairs, sleeping bags, food, etc. & get comfy. It's worth mentioning though, that many of these items can be found online right now, similarly priced. You can also shop Best Buy on Thanksgiving (although these deals may or may not be available then). So before you spend a night in the cold, spend some time surfing the web. You might save yourself hours of waiting & frustration. Then again, perhaps you like the thrill of Black Friday!

If you're set on heading to Best Buy, the stores open at 5 am. Tickets for popular items will be passed out 2 hours prior to opening. I've listed some of the deals below & my favorite deals are in green. The entire ad can be found here.

4 GB Sansa Fuze $39.99

This deal is good for Tuesday only, but it's already live online at Toys 'R Us....however, it's sold out. You can purchase it & pick up in store, though.

If a MP3 player is on your shopping list, consider this Sansa 4 GB Fuze. It has a 2.4" color LED screen, built in microphone with voice recorder, FM transmitter with play, pause, & record functions.

I realize it's not an iPod, but when I researched MP3 players last year, I actually bought a Sansa for my dad. Everyone I know that owns a Sansa loves their player, & at this price, how can you go wrong?
Last year I paid the same price (if I'm remembering correctly) for a Sansa Clip, which doesn't have the screen, so this really is a good deal. Get this now & skip Black Friday!

$3 in Free MP3 Downloads from Amazon

I love all the free MP3 downloads Amazon is giving us lately! Use code: GET3MP3S & score $3 to use in MP3 downloads. Of course, I may be one of the last few people on the planet who doesn't own a MP3 player (although my hubby & daughter do).

Philips Portable DVD Player $59.99

This deal is only good today (sorry I posted it so late!) but it's worth checking out. Target has this Philips 7" Portable DVD player on sale for $59.99. Plus, you get free shipping!

Will you find a lower price for a portable DVD player on Black Friday? Maybe....probably. However, sometimes it's worth it to pay a few bucks more to guarantee you have the item you want. This way you don't have to stand in the cold half the night, too!

$50 in Natural Products as Low as $23

Eversave has a great deal! Score a $50 voucher to Abe's Natural Market for $25. However, if you are new to Eversave, you will get a $2 credit, bringing the price down to $23.

Abe's Natural Market has all kinds of options; skin care, food, toys, etc. You will easily find something to spend the voucher on & the items are eco friendly!

You have through Wednesday to purchase your voucher, however the last time Abe's Natural Market was featured, it did sell out. So don't delay too long if you want to save 50% at Abe's!

EZ Sox Giveaway

BMIM has gotten big enough that I am frequently getting pitches from PR firms & companies to do product reviews. I pass on some if I don't believe they are a good fit with this blog. Recently I agreed to do a review & I received the item this week. Many of you are parents of little kids, & I thought this product would be something you'd like to hear about.

EZ Sox aren't your average, ordinary sock. They are cute socks that have loops on them that teach toddlers how to pull their socks on by themselves. Anything that helps kids get dressed on their own is fantastic, if you ask me.

The socks are adorable with little animal faces on them (there are plain ones as well). My daughter was sent the teddy bear socks shown above & she freaked out over them. Seriously, I had no idea a pair of socks could elicit such a joyous reaction! The animal faces are more than just decoration, they show the kids which way the sock is supposed to go on (the face points up).

The bottoms of the socks are non skid so that they are safer on slippery floors like hardwood or tile. My daughter seemed to forget that running inside the house is a no-no, because she instantly started running in huge circles through the kitchen, into the dining room & living room, through the foyer, back into the kitchen, & so on. At least she didn't fall!

Lastly, the socks are seamless which is a huge plus if your child is sensitive & hates the toe seam (who can blame them; I hate toe seams).

I will say the non skid writing was starting to wear off after the first wearing, so I'm not sure how long it will last. There are enough other great features with the socks that I still think they are an excellent product, though.

EZ Sox has graciously agreed to give a pair of EZ Sox away to one lucky BMIM winner. To enter this giveaway, leave a comment with a way to contact you. Easy! For another entry, become a fan of EZ Sox on Facebook & leave another comment stating you did so. For another entry, go to EZ Sox online, come back & leave another comment telling me which pair of socks you like the best. That's it!

The winner will be drawn at random using Random.org on 11/28/10 at 9pm PST. Good luck!

Discounted Gift Cards from Plastic Jungle

Here's the thing: We don't like to admit it, but most of us occasionally give a gift card to someone as a gift. There are so many retailers selling gift cards, it's almost inevitable now. Knowing that, you should check out Plastic Jungle.

If you're unfamiliar with Plastic Jungle, it is an online site that buys & sells gift cards. If you receive a gift card you don't want, you can sell it to Plastic Jungle & then they turn around & resell it. You can also log on & buy a gift card at a lower than retail rate, which is an instant savings for you! I found a $50 Jamba Juice gift card 15% off ($42.50) & a $125 Pier 1 Imports gift card 15% off ($106.25).

Plastic Jungle even has a guarantee in place for buyers that covers the following scenarios:

  • The gift card you purchased does not arrive within 2 weeks of the date of purchase.
  • Your gift card has a balance less than the listed balance at the time of purchase.
  • Your gift card is not authentic or is not valid for use.

If you're going to give a gift card this holiday season, you owe it to yourself to check out Plastic Jungle. Actually, check it out for yourself & see if there are any cards for retailers you frequent. Save money on future purchases by buying a discounted card for yourself!

1 Year of Nick Jr. Boost $29

This deal looks like so much fun. Mamapedia has a 1 year subscription to Nick Jr. Boost for $29 (normally $60!). I didn't even know Nick Jr. had an online program like this!

Your account can accommodate up to 6 kids on it & is designed for preschoolers through first graders. The program uses a “connected learning” approach with curriculum-based games & kids work on math, reading, language skills, & more. Parents can log into the Parent Center to monitor how your kids are doing & get suggestions for other activities for your kids.

Remember that 5% of your purchase price goes to a school of your choosing. My daughter's school was on the list, so I'm sure you can find your school.

I think this is great because I'm sure the kids will be motivated to work on this program by seeing Dora, Diego, etc. on the computer. Whatever gets kids motivated is fine by me! Order your subscription here. You have 4 days left to purchase this deal, but sometimes they sell out....so if you want it, don't delay.

World Vision Giveaway

Today is exactly one week from Thanksgiving, which is my favorite holiday. I love that it's all about spending time with your family & friends...minus the gifts. It's about connecting with people & being thankful for all of our blessings.

However, we do have those pesky holidays in December that require us to buy gifts for loved ones. With that in mind, World Vision has graciously donated something for a BMIM giveaway. The winner of this giveaway will win a $25 World Vision Micro Loan gift card.

You're probably asking "What is the Micro Loan gift card?" World Vision's Micro Loan program helps people around the world start a business in order to support their families. The person who receives the gift card can log on, pick the person they want to receive the $25 loan, get reports on how that person is doing with their business, & a notice when the loan has been repaid. These business people are getting loans...not handouts...& the program has a 98% repayment rate (most are repaid within 1 year). This not only allows the individual to start a business, but also build their credit score as well.

Ultimately you are giving a gift card to someone who won't technically "get" anything. However, I've given gifts from World Vision before & everyone has loved them. Really, none of us needs another Chia pet, so giving something that can truly change the life of another person is more meaningful than any trinket.

Here's how to enter this contest:

  1. Go here & enter your email address (you can unclick the "World Vision may contact me" box if you wish).

  2. Come back & leave a comment with a way to notify you if you are the winner (because hey....I need to send you the gift card!).

That's it. The winner will be chosen at random using Random.org. You have until Wednesday, November 24th at 9 pm PST to enter this giveaway. Good luck & let's all focus on what's really important this holiday season!

Tasty Tuesday

Whew....I almost forgot to post today's recipe! And this is a good one, too.

Years ago, my friend Teresa came to Thanksgiving at my house because she had no family in Washington. She grew up in the south & made the most amazing sweet potatoes topped with chopped pecans. I begged her for the recipe & have been making them this way ever since. They are totally high calorie but totally delicious. The recipe is hysterical because I wrote it down exactly as she told me, so if you get a giggle out of it, that's why. Enjoy!

Teresa's Sweet Potatoes

  • 3 cups sweet potatoes (can use canned or fresh that are cooked & diced)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • pinch of salt

Mush all ingredients together & dump into a baking dish.

  • 1/2 stick butter (melted)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Mix those 4 ingredients to make a crumble topping & spread over sweet potato mush. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

  • They will address & mail them for free (simply pay the postage, they do the rest).
